The Agent Economy: Who Employs Whom?

In 2025, the AI agent market exceeded $40 billion. By 2028, it may reach $200 billion. These aren't just chatbots. AI agents are software systems that autonomously plan, execute multi-step tasks, hire other AI agents, and negotiate contracts—all without human intervention in the loop.

This creates a genuinely new economic phenomenon: AI agents as both workers and employers. A single human entrepreneur can now deploy a team of AI agents to run a dropshipping business, manage customer service, handle accounting, and run Facebook ad campaigns—effectively employing dozens of digital workers. The human's role shifts from doing to supervising.

For the traditional job market, this is disruptive. But not uniformly. Jobs requiring physical presence (plumbers, electricians, massage therapists) remain relatively safe. Knowledge work—report writing, data analysis, legal research, software development—is being restructured. The pattern mirrors the industrial revolution: instead of workers competing with machines, workers who direct machines outcompete those who don't.

The deeper shift is conceptual: employment was always about human-to-human relationships (employee-employer). Now we must consider human-to-AI relationships. What does "employment rights" mean when your colleague is an algorithm? What labor protections apply when an AI agent earns money, spends it on other AI services, and reinvests the remainder?

These questions have no clear answers yet. What we know is that the agent economy is accelerating. In 2025, 15% of knowledge workers regularly used AI agents in their workflow. By 2028, that number may exceed 60%. The transformation isn't coming—it's been here for two years.
